建议 & Our Academic Feedback System

的 advisory system is at the heart of the 劳伦斯 学院 experience, and is one of the most important components of life on campus.

Advisory fosters faculty-student and peer-to-peer connections and creates mini support systems within the school community.

At its most basic, an advisory group is 4-8 students of varying grade levels, 背景, and friend groups, and a faculty member advisor. Advisory groups see each other every school day, either in 20-minute morning meetings or at short all-school assemblies.

Advisors monitor their students’ welfare and academic progress, and are also families’ main point of contact at LA. 然而, advisory groups are much more than a required daily check-in: 的y’re close-knit units where students should gain confidence and inspiration, and feel safe to share both triumphs and struggles. 的 advisor and fellow advisees provide guidance, 动机, and friendship; some celebrate birthdays and other big milestones. In short, an advisory group becomes an on-campus family.
Every other Wednesday during advisory meetings, students receive electronic progress reports from their teachers (and, if applicable, their learning coach) that contain praise, encouragement, and constructive criticism, as well as advice, reinforcement, and specific pointers for improving academic performance. Comments are addressed to the students themselves, allowing students to take responsibility for their learning, with the student’s advisor supporting that ownership.
Perhaps more importantly, the frequency and consistency of feedback gives advisors insight into patterns or changes in a student’s attitude or behavior that could be the first sign of a problem. A written comment can spark a one-on-one session, a larger conversation, or a phone call home to the student’s family. Opening the door for these sorts of interventions often helps clear up misunderstandings or solve a potential problem early on.

综合

劳伦斯 学院 students, like all 21st century teenagers, are faced with sometimes-overwhelming realities as they learn more about themselves and their place in the local, 国家, and global communities.

综合 program creates a non-academic space within each school week to discuss larger issues – life skills, study skills, and social and emotional topics – with the goal of helping students learn more about and process these issues in the comfort of a safe and open environment.

As part of the 综合 program, students engage in conversations about healthy decisions and choices, and about the world around them, sometimes as an advisory group and sometimes by grade. Ninth graders, for example, learn about identity, intent vs. 影响, and strategies for interrupting bullying and harassment, while 10th graders explore topics related to sexuality and sexual education; juniors and seniors, 与此同时, focus on college counseling and their futures.
"From the beginning, advisory has set the perfect tone for my time on campus. It is my safe place. Anything and everything - my advisor is there for me."
